Overview
Proud and Torn is a visual novel detailing Hungarian history from the point of view of a peasant family in the Hungarian countryside. The project contains hundreds of photographs that were altered, isolated into parts, put into animation, or crafted into photomontages. The project is designed to resemble a personalized scrapbook but utilizes groundbreaking web design tactics.
Challenge
Proud & Torn is a visual memoir that chronicles Hungarian history through the lens of a peasant family from the Hungarian countryside. The project aims to provide an intimate perspective on the tumultuous events of the 20th century, including the Holocaust, World War II, and the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. The challenge was to present this complex history in an engaging and accessible format that resonates with a broad audience.
Approach
As a mobile web developer, I joined the team after the main project was completed and focused on adapting Proud & Torn for mobile devices. The project utilizes hundreds of photographs, many of which have been altered, isolated into parts, or crafted into photomontages, to tell the story. The design resembles a personalized scrapbook, employing groundbreaking web design tactics to enhance the storytelling experience. My role involved optimizing each page for mobile devices, ensuring accessibility compliance, converting SVG images to selectable text, and transferring inline styles to external SCSS stylesheets.
Outcome
The mobile adaptation of Proud & Torn successfully preserved the immersive and interactive experience of the original project while making it accessible on mobile devices. The project has been recognized for its innovative approach to digital storytelling and its contribution to understanding Hungarian history from a personal perspective, receiving an honorable mention on Awwwards.
